What can I tell you about this decadent yet extremely unattractive dessert? It is so rich, so wonderful and so unlike anything I have ever come across before. This recipe is one I have adapted from a favourite website of mine, Tasty Kitchen. So I don’t ruin the mystery that surrounds the sweet indulgence that is the Mystery Mocha I wont say another word. Just provide you with the recipe so you can reveal the mystery in the comfort of your own home.

Ingredients
(serves 10)

3/4 cup sugar
1 cup Plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
A Pinch salt
1 tablespoons cocoa powder
Splash of warm water
1/2 cup milk (I use skim)
1.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
Handful of mixed berries (I used frozen)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
4 Tablespoons cocoa
1 cup strong black coffee, cold (I used decaf)

Method –

Preheat oven to 175′C (350ºF)

Firstly, get a medium size bowl and sift together 3/4 cup sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt then set it to one side.

In a small bowl place one Tablespoon of cocoa powder,

then, add the splash of warm water and stir to combine.

It should make a smooth paste….and look kind of like melted chocolate.

Add the milk and vanilla and mix until well combined. I know its hard to refrain from drinking it as chocolate milk is as we all know deeeelicious 🙂 You will be very glad you used your self control in the end I promise 🙂

Now pour the chocolate, milk, vanilla mix to the flour, sugar and baking powder mix.

and stir until well combined.

Pour into a 8×6 inch pan.

Sprinkle the handful of berries over the cake batter and set it aside. Take note of how pretty it looks…..hold onto this memory, you may need to remind yourself of this desserts inner beauty in the not to distant future…

Now, sift and combine the brown sugar, additional 1/4 sugar and final 4 Tablespoons of cocoa powder then sprinkle and spread evenly over the cake batter.

admire the layers of mystery….

Now lastly pour the cup of cold coffee over the top….

This will not look pretty and possibly test our friendship…

….do you trust me??

remember how pretty it was when we sprinkled the berries over the cake batter?? Maybe I should refresh your memory…

pretty right 😉

Now, as we get closer to the miraculous moment of truth where the mystery of the mocha will be revealed in all its glory,

Bake at 175’C (350’F) for 40 minutes.

It still doesnt look terribly pretty but at this point the smell is so wonderful you wont care, not one little bit 🙂

I love how mysteriously it seems to make its own sauce….underneath the cake layer

do you see it?

….how does that even happen??

you know what, I don’t even care.

Mystery mocha I do love you very much 🙂 🙂 🙂

Serve warm with ice cream or regular whipped cream (or Dream whip) and a fresh strawberry….and maybe a drizzle of caramel if your feeling a little dangerous and wanting to really go all out.

YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It keeps very well for 2-3 days and is even wonderful served cold or at room temp. Maybe that is where the mystery lies….its so good no matter how it is served?

How will you enjoy yours?
