Healthy, Homemade Trail Mix

Christmas tradition numero tres = trail mix baby!

Every year we get a suh-weet little packet of trail mix in our Christmas stockings and I love, love, love it!

It’s the perfect way to fuel the frenzied morning that follows.

And come on now, who doesn’t love a heaping handful of good o’ trail mix?

Especially one that has a few decadent, delicious dark chocolate chips thrown in for good measure?!

This year I thought it would be fun to make our own trail mix and yes, that really is my idea of fun 🙂

Healthy, Homemade Trail Mix

You know sometimes you buy trail mix and the fruit to nut ratio is all wrong?

Or there are certain things included that you just don’t really care for (I’m looking at you banana chips) . . . which means you then proceed to spend way more time than you should picking out, or avoiding said pesky ingredient . . . and, even if you manage to pick out and remove all traces of the offending ingredient you can still taste it. . . not cool banana chips, not cool at all!

Healthy, Homemade Trail Mix

Well sweet invisible internet friend of mine don’t you worry, today we are making our very own trail mix – just the way you like it!

I guess we are making it the way I like it but, I’m pretty sure you and I are on the same page when it comes to tasty treats, you know what they say – great minds think alike and all that 😉

Healthy, Homemade Trail Mix

Our healthy, homemade holiday trail mix is made with just a handful of all natural, real food ingredients that I bet you have on hand already.

It’s quick and easy to prepare, way cheaper than store bought, super healthy and super, super yummy.

Today’s “recipe” , if you could even call it that, is pretty basic, I’ve really just thrown a bunch of my fave nuts, seeds, dried fruits into a bowl with a sprinkling of dark chocolate chips ( ← because well, why not?!) given it a good stir and boomshakalocka = done!

Almonds and cashews provide our main nut base – classics like these you can’t go wrong!

Sunflower seeds and pepitas are thrown in for a little extra crunch

Cranberries – Slightly tart, sweet, chewy and oh so festive!

Dried apricots – Sweet and juicy. A great contrast in colour, flavour and texture too –  just delish.

Toasted coconut flakes make things a little bit special – They are crispy, crunchy, smoky and sweet.

And last but not least we have our antioxidant rich dark chocolate chips because, well, chocolate makes everything better = just let it happen.

Healthy, Homemade Trail Mix

Our healthy, homemade holiday trail mix would be the perfect addition to your Christmas snack table.

It’s also the perfect way to fuel your last minute Christmas shopping/wrapping frenzy or, the perfect treat to make and give to friends, family and the ones you love.

It’s also something you can get the kids involved in. My little lady had a great time helping me make (and eat) this trail mix.

Simple, healthy, homemade deliciousness.

Eat it by the handful, serve it with some Greek yoghurt as a perfect little mid morning/late afternoon snack.

Add it to your Christmas cheese plate alongside some fresh fruit, or pop it on a pretty little jar (or cellophane bag), throw on some ribbon and give it to the someone you love.

Healthy, Homemade Trail Mix

As I said this “recipe” is totally customisable, feel free to play with the ratios and/or ingredients and make it the way you like it.

Vegan, dairy free, Paleo friendly – something for everybody.

Simple, healthy, homemade deliciousness, loaded with nutritional value (and dark chocolate chips 😉 ) –  The perfect treat to make and share with the ones you love.

Make it. Eat it. Love, love, love it.
